EnduroSharp is a patented line of aircraft maintenance tools molded from Torlon® polyamide-imide (PAI), a high-performance polymer that holds a sharp edge without damaging the surface underneath. The tools remove cured sealants, adhesives, coatings, tapes, and gap fillers from composite, aluminum, plastic, glass, and ceramic substrates and fasteners. They are used in MRO and line maintenance on commercial and military aircraft, and are approved for use on U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy aerospace systems.
The line traces back to a military problem: maintainers lacking an effective non-metallic removal tool were resorting to sharpened putty knives, scribes, and utility blades. Under contract to the Air Force Research Laboratory, the University of Dayton Research Institute developed the EnduroSharp tool designs in Torlon PAI — and Pexco, the family of companies that includes Precise Aerospace, manufactures the line today.
Torlon holds an effective cutting edge yet won’t gouge aluminum or cut into composite the way steel does. Depending on the tool, it removes elastomeric coatings, boots, tapes, sealants, adhesives, and gap fillers without damaging the substrate — the reason the tools earned military approval in the first place.
Metal tools — and the sharpened putty knives, scribes, and utility blades maintainers resort to without a better option — have caused both short- and long-term damage to aircraft, driving expensive repairs and reduced vehicle availability. EnduroSharp cutting tools are non-metallic and prevent damage to metallic (primed) and nonmetallic components and substrates.
Torlon blades are resharpenable — softer plastics like acrylic, polycarbonate, and phenolic lose their edge quickly or burr when resharpened. Torlon tools withstand heat to 500°F (260°C) and resist standard aerospace fluids and solvents, so a blade stays in service instead of in the bottom drawer.
EnduroSharp includes scraper blades, gap blades, gap-filler removal bits and discs, adhesive reamers and cutters, a rotary sealant-removal cutter, nutplate abrasion tools, and ABNIR surface-prep kits — available as individual tools, consumables, and complete kits, with pneumatic-tool options for larger jobs.
